Sweden – Vattenfall has halted development of Sweden’s Kriegers Flak offshore wind project until further notice. The company says the investment conditions for the project are uneconomic. The wind farm was scheduled to be commissioned in 2028.
Sweden’s Kriegers Flak is located some 30 kilometers south of Trelleborg. It was the most advanced offshore wind project in Sweden, according to Vattenfall. It should generate a capacity of 2.7 TWh (640 MW) of electrical energy per year. Kriegers Flak is adjacent to existing Danish and German wind farms. Vattenfall obtained a construction permit for 35 to 50 wind turbines in the area in May 2022.
Vattenfall states that the current investment conditions in Sweden are not profitable and it therefore stops further development of the project. Completion before 2028 is therefore no longer realistic. Should conditions improve and permits are still valid, the project may be resumed. One of the conditions given by Vattenfall is the presence of a connection point to the national grid.
Vattenfall currently has several wind projects under development in Sweden. Collectively, these could provide 18 TWh of green electricity per year by 2035.
