The Netherlands– Vattenfall has forged a partnership with Renewi, which involves Vattenfall procuring over 7.5 million m3 of green gas annually from Renewi, derived from organic waste.
Vattenfall’s commitment to environmental stewardship is underscored by its ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, a goal that has received verification from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This strategic alliance with Renewi aligns with Vattenfall’s mission to contribute actively to climate goals, particularly in CO2 reduction, and reduce the Netherlands’ reliance on natural gas imports.
One of the Netherlands’ climate goals is to produce 2 billion m3 of green gas annually by 2030, a substantial increase from the current production of approximately 250 million m3. The initiative spearheaded by Vattenfall and Renewi positions green gas as a key player in steering the nation towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.
Organic waste conversion
The green gas procured by Vattenfall is generated in Renewi’s Organics plant located in Amsterdam. This facility employs a digester to process organic waste streams, including food scraps from restaurants and canteens, as well as expired products from supermarkets.
The process involves converting these organic waste streams into green gas, which is seamlessly integrated into the regular gas network. By blending with natural gas, the green gas enhances the overall sustainability of the gas mix, contributing to the broader goal of achieving 20% sustainable gas consumption in households and small businesses by 2030.
By harnessing the potential of green gas from organic waste, the partnership not only contributes to reducing carbon emissions but also accelerates the transition towards a circular economy.
