Sweden – Swedish ferry company Stena Line has hired Wärtsilä to complete and convert three of its ships to run on methanol fuel.

The complete scope of Wärtsilä’s supply package will include engine conversions, fuel tank instrumentation and valves, transfer pumps, low pressure pump skids, fuel valve trains, Methanol Fuel Pump Units, and the automation of the system.

This arrangement would give the vessels unprecedented fuel flexibility because methanol is one of the essential elements of decarbonization in the maritime sector. The conversions will involve updating the engines and the fuel delivery system in addition to connecting the new installations with the ship’s current systems.

Complying with standards

Ferries will be able to comply with a number of current and prospective standards, such as the IMO 2050 GHG reduction target, FuelEU Maritime, and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), by switching to methanol fuel.

The conversions are anticipated to occur in 2025.
