Denmark – RWE has begun work on the onshore substation for its Thor offshore wind project in Denmark.
One of the largest Danish contributions to the green transition officially gets underway with the groundbreaking ceremony. Thor will be the nation’s largest offshore wind farm to date and will generate a huge number of employment and roles for local vocational training.
The Lemvig municipality will be the site of the onshore substation’s construction. Together with MT Hjgaard Danmark, one of Denmark’s top firms for massive building and infrastructure projects, Siemens Energy will handle the civil engineering and construction work.
Electricity for Danish homes
RWE will construct the Thor offshore wind farm about 22 kilometers off the coast of Thorsminde in the Danish portion of the North Sea. Thor will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date with a planned capacity of more than 1,000 MW. Thor will be able to generate enough green electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million Danish homes once it is completely operational, which is expected by the end of 2027 at the latest.
Sustainable techniques
Thor Offshore Wind Farm will also use sustainable techniques. As a result, Siemens Gamesa’s CO2-reduced steel towers will be used in half of the 72 wind turbines, among other things. Steel used to construct the towers is more environmentally friendly; it emits at least 63 percent less CO2 than standard steel. Siemens Gamesa’s GreenerTowers will be used for the first time by RWE.
