Germany – As part of the Mobil-Grid-CoP project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) is collaborating with ABB to develop the world’s largest mobile grid simulator.
It will be used to test the safety and reliability of renewable energy equipment in real-world conditions, such as wind turbines, solar panels, and hydroelectric generators. The test program will ensure that a renewable energy project connected to a public power grid complies with all local grid codes and does not jeopardize grid performance and stability.
Live in 2023
To create an artificial power grid on site, the mobile grid simulator will use ABB’s ACS6080 Power Electronics Grid Simulator (PEGS) technology. Fraunhofer IWES will use the system to test compliance with all standards and simulate various grid operating modes, including fault conditions.
The mobile grid simulator will be the world’s largest of its kind when it goes live in 2023. It will have a power rating of up to 28 megavolt ampere (MVA) and an 80 MVA short-term capability.
