Norway – DNV has confirmed technical feasibility and commercial readiness of Wison Offshore and Marine’s w.semi floating wind foundation.

w.semi is WOM’s new concept for a floating wind platform/foundation. It can be used for floating wind turbines in water depths of up to 50 meters. The first stage of the certification process has been completed by issuing a Verification Letter for w.semi.

At least four times as much ocean surface area can be covered by floating wind turbines compared to bottom-fixed wind turbines. This allows for greater flexibility in site selection, including the ability to target areas with higher wind speeds and those with fewer social and environmental impacts.

Floating wind potential

Floating offshore wind is expected to generate 15% of all offshore wind energy by 2050, according to DNV GL’s latest Energy Transition Outlook report. To put things in perspective, this is the size of the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm, Hywind Tampen, which is currently under construction in Norway.
