The Netherlands – Vattenfall is taking part in the tender for the newly opened Hollandse Kust West.
Both lots VI and VII are up for tender with the energy company. Vattenfall is working on Lot VI with BASF, its current partner in the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm, which is currently being built.
The wind farm Hollandse Kust West is 53 kilometers off the coast of the Netherlands. Two separate tenders are being offered for the total area: Lot VI and Lot VII. Each of the lots will have a capacity of 700 MW of offshore wind energy. Tenders for both locations are due on May 12, 2022. After the summer, the Dutch government will make a decision on who will be awarded the tender.
Hollandse Kust West is expected to generate electricity for the first time in 2026. The energy company sees a lot of synergy with the nearby Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm (HKZ).
Biodiversity
The criteria for selection in the Lot VII tender are investments and innovations that benefit the Dutch energy system. For Lot VI, a winner will be chosen that best mitigates the wind farm’s environmental impact. For Lot VI, Vattenfall collaborates with BASF. Vattenfall aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. By 2030, Vattenfall wants to have a net positive impact on biodiversity. BASF wants to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, and by 2050, it wants to be net zero.
The Environment & Sustainability Unit, which Vattenfall has assembled, includes an in-house life sciences department with extensive research and development experience, as well as sustainability experts who actively work with Vattenfall teams to lead the way in sustainability. For HKZ, the unit launched a joint study with Rich North Sea (De Rijke Noordzee), a nature conservation organization, to see if and how nature-inclusive turbine-foundation designs can benefit the local ecosystem.
