United States – UL is working with ONYX Insight to expand their life evaluation program, combining UL’s wind forecasting and structural assessment with ONYX Insight’s operations and maintenance expertise and predictive technology to help operators improve the performance of their maturing assets.

In 2022, more than 15% of wind projects will have been operational for approximately two decades. Assets can become less reliable as they age, leaving operators with three options for protecting their investment: repowering, decommissioning, or life extension. Advanced analysis and monitoring technology are helping to transform the economics of life extension and deliver ongoing revenue for asset owners at an affordable cost by removing uncertainty around critical maintenance decisions.

UL – ONYX partnership

The collaboration between ONYX Insight and UL includes a global review of over 100 GW of assets. It also includes technical advisory services on acquisitions such as turbine technical reviews, target site evaluations, and operational expenditure forecasts.

UL’s extensive track record of life evaluation work includes structural assessments ā€” including turbine, tower, and foundation ā€” to determine turbine capabilities and useful life estimates. Operators require data on key structural components, such as tower and foundation health, in order to calculate risk levels and projected maintenance costs, allowing them to confidently assign budgets and justify key decisions to investors. ONYX Insight’s foundation monitoring hardware liberates additional data streams for analysis, feeding into a well-informed predictive maintenance strategy and lowering operational and maintenance costs.
