United Kingdom – ETZ and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult are teaming up to create the UK’s first world-class National Floating Wind Innovation Centre in Aberdeen.
The centre will serve as a hub for developing new products, services, and ventures in the floating offshore wind industry. It will be located in the Altens Industrial Estate of the Energy Transition Zone and is being developed to ensure that the North East of Scotland and the rest of the UK take advantage of the massive opportunity created by the Scottish seabed leasing round, Scotwind, which will drive the development and demand for floating offshore wind. The innovation center’s operating costs will be covered by ORE Catapult, with a $5 million contribution from ETZ.
Digital solutions
Prior to moving on to testing and validating key components of floating structures such as moorings, anchors, dynamic cables, and electrical systems the Center will concentrate on digital simulation and modeling.
As a result of the region’s strong ties to subsea engineering and the recent approval of 14.6 GW of floating wind power through the ScotWind leasing round, the North East of Scotland has a unique opportunity to capitalize on its first mover advantage and become a global leader in offshore floating wind.
