Germany – Ørsted has signed a 12-year corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with Google, under which Google will purchase 50 MW of Ørsted’s proposed 900 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 Offshore Wind Farm in the German North Sea.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 was the world’s first large-scale offshore wind farm to be awarded with no bids, and it is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2025. Because the project was not funded by the government, the CPPA with Google will help Ørsted provide revenue certainty and mature Borkum Riffgrund 3 towards a final investment decision, which is expected by the end of 2021.
The CPPA with Ørsted will help Google meet its commitment to run all of its data centers, cloud regions, and campuses on carbon-free energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week by 2030.
Google pioneered the concept of carbon-free energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week, where every kWh of power consumption is matched by carbon-free electricity production every hour, on the grid where the electricity is consumed. Ørsted shares Google’s vision of enabling carbon-free energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and both companies are founding members of the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact, a movement coordinated by Sustainable Energy for All and the United Nations. Borkum Riffgrund 3 power will bring Google one step closer to meeting their 24/7 commitment in Germany.
