Norway – Equinor, RWE Renewables, and Hydro REIN have inked an offshore wind partnership agreement in Norway.
The partners will jointly prepare and submit an application to the Norwegian authorities to develop a large-scale bottom-fixed offshore wind farm in the Sørlige Nordsjø II area in the Norwegian North Sea.
Norwegian offshore wind licensing
The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has established two offshore renewables zones (Utsira Nord and Srlige Nordsj II) and is actively working on the licensing procedure for offshore wind generating projects in Norway. The area borders the Danish sector in the North Sea and is strategically placed for electricity delivery to Europe.
Wind resources of Sørlige Nordsjø II
With ocean depths ranging from 53 to 70 meters, the Sørlige Nordsjø II area offers some of the best wind resources in the world. Following the EU’s and the UK’s declared objectives for 300 GW and 100 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050, respectively, to meet their net zero aspirations, the area has the potential to offer a considerable quantity of renewable energy to countries trying to shift their energy mix.
