Germany – The Norwegian energy firm Statkraft has signed an agreement for Vodafone to reduce its CO2 emissions by 500.000 MWh with German and Norwegian wind and hydropower.

At the beginning of 2020, Vodafone Germany began to turn to renewable electricity its own pages. The agreement concluded now covers the remaining renewable energy needs for Vodafone in 2020 and 2021 with Origin Guarantees from the German and Norwegian wind and hydro-power portfolios of Statkraft. The contract incorporates for this reason the 500,000 MWh output of wind and hydropower, leading to an annual energy demand of approximately 140,000 households of three people.

Statkraft and Vodafone secure continued operation of Ü20 plants

While some green power was generated in Norway in 2020, after 1 January 2021 Statkraft and Vodafone exclusively use German renewable energy. In addition to German hydroelectric power stations, wind turbines that offer EEG subsidies since 2021 are eligible for the first time. The partnership between Statkraft and Vodafone ensures the continuing commercial activity of these wind farms and shows that, in view of the newly agreed follow-up subsidy, affordable options remain available to wind farm operators outside of the German Renewable Energy Act (EEG).
