The Netherlands – Omani government, Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), Port of Amsterdam, Zenith Energy Terminals, and GasLog have united to pioneer the development of a liquid hydrogen supply chain emanating from Oman.
Sealing this commitment, the entities inked a pivotal agreement during the COP28 conference in Dubai, setting the stage for a transformative endeavor. The overarching goal of this alliance is the establishment of a liquid hydrogen corridor connecting Oman and Amsterdam. This project aims to unravel the intricacies of creating an open-access facility dedicated to hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and export in Oman. Complementing this infrastructure, GasLog’s innovative hydrogen transport ships will play a crucial role in ferrying the liquid hydrogen across the envisioned corridor. Simultaneously, Zenith Energy’s terminal in the Port of Amsterdam is slated to evolve into a key hub for importing, regasifying, and distributing hydrogen originating from Oman.
Liquid hydrogen transport
A central technological thrust of this initiative involves the design and development of specialized ships capable of transporting liquid hydrogen. GasLog, at the forefront of this innovation, is actively engaged in crafting vessels tailored for the unique requirements of hydrogen transport. Building on the success of the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain Project’s maiden liquid hydrogen carrier, the Suiso Frontier, the collaboration envisions expanding this capability to facilitate international liquid hydrogen transport well before the dawn of the next decade.
At its core, this collaboration positions Oman as a green hydrogen producer, harnessing the potential of solar and wind energy. The strategic geographical location of Oman propels its focus on serving not only the European market but also extending its reach to the burgeoning Asian market.
