Norway – ABB has joined the HyPilot initiative by Hystar. The HyPilot project is receiving vital power technology from ABB. This technology consists of industry-leading parts that allow for accurate voltage and current regulation to replicate a range of operational conditions.

Hystar’s one-megawatt (MW) containerized PEM electrolysers are being field-tested as part of the HyPilot project to validate the company’s patented technology. The project will be completed at the Kårstø Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland, Norway, by the end of 2023. Leading Nordic companies in the field, Equinor, Yara, and Gassco, are joining forces with ABB for this eagerly awaited field project.

The DC-DC converters and low-harmonic insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) rectifiers from ABB will control the electricity supply so that the electrolyser can function in real-world field settings. ABB will offer on-the-ground local support and knowledge in Norway for the length of the project.

Demonstration

During the 10,000-hour trial, operators will collect data to show that green hydrogen can be created economically and consistently using renewable energy sources, including wind power, but that this process is contingent on overcoming the intermittent nature of renewable energy.
