Germany – Germany’s journey to climate neutrality hinges on harnessing the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier. In this pursuit, the TransHyDE flagship project takes center stage, paving the way for a comprehensive transformation of hydrogen transport technologies.

Hydrogen, sourced from both domestic production and international imports, emerges as a linchpin in Germany’s quest for a carbon-neutral future. Yet, the geographical disconnect between production and consumption necessitates robust and innovative transport infrastructures for short, medium, and long distances.

The journey towards efficient hydrogen transport involves navigating existing gas pipelines and storage networks, while also blazing a trail for novel transport technologies. The TransHyDE project tackles this dual challenge head-on, exploring various transport avenues and emphasizing technology-neutrality.

Four pathbreaking technologies

The heart of TransHyDE lies in its four-fold approach, each dedicated to propelling a distinct hydrogen transport technology:

  • High-Pressure Containers: Hydrogen finds safe haven in high-pressure containers, enabling its smooth journey across varying distances.
  • Gas Pipelines, Old and New: Existing and novel gas pipelines offer conduits for hydrogen’s passage, necessitating seamless integration with established infrastructure.
  • Bound in Ammonia: Hydrogen’s voyage can be encapsulated in ammonia, unlocking innovative possibilities for its transportation.
  • LOHC Propulsion: Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology propels hydrogen through its liquid carriers, offering a promising solution for efficient transport.

By initiating its roadmap process, the project steers towards comprehensive integration, aligning with Germany’s goals, aspirations, and timelines for hydrogen adoption.

New standards

A pivotal element in TransHyDE’s journey is the development of new standards, norms, and certifications. These foundational building blocks are essential for the seamless integration of hydrogen transport technologies into the market. Safety, efficiency, and durability remain the pillars upon which these solutions are crafted.

As TransHyDE propels hydrogen transport technologies into the spotlight, the project also underscores the essential nexus between innovation, regulation, and environmental responsibility. By addressing challenges, embracing novel ideas, and fostering international collaboration, TransHyDE ensures that Germany’s ambitions for climate neutrality remain within reach.
