Germany – In close collaboration with the Prognitz district, Enertrag, a major Brandenburg firm for renewable energies, intends to construct a hydrogen production facility in the Prignitz-Falkenhagen industrial park.

By offering a location for the industrial generation of green hydrogen, this partnership represents an important step in the development of Brandenburg’s, Germany’s, and Europe’s hydrogen policy.

A 130 MW electrolysis plant will be built as part of the ambitious project, one of the first of its kind in Brandenburg, over an area of around 8.6 hectares in the southeast corner of the Prignitz-Falkenhagen industrial park. A local substation and a hydrogen manufacturing facility will be erected on a designated industrial site. With the choice to create the “Prignitz energy conversion industrial park” development plan, a crucial first step toward the project’s successful completion was made. Building a substation and converting farmland into industrial space will lay the groundwork for developing the H2 economy in Brandenburg and elsewhere in Germany. The launch is anticipated for mid to late 2027.

Favorable location

The commercial park Prignitz-Falkenhagen, where the facility is being constructed, is distinguished by its advantageous location on the A24 federal highway in the northwest of the state of Brandenburg. In finding a suitable location and making contact with the neighborhood businesses in the business park as well as the city and district, the Prignitz business development agency was crucial.

With its decisions made on July 6, 2023 for the preparation of the “Prignitz energy conversion industrial park” development plan, the Prignitz district council has now also established crucial preconditions for the project. The Prignitz district will continue to do everything in its power to facilitate its implementation.

Around 20 permanent positions and external trades will be created as part of the 150–200 million euro investment, and more than 50 new employment will be added during the construction phase. The local economy may benefit from this, which would ultimately increase the region’s prosperity.

Doing hydrogen

The joint project doing hydrogen, which aims to convert a portion of the Ontras gas network infrastructure to a 100% hydrogen network and thereby lay the groundwork for a nationwide hydrogen network in eastern Germany and beyond, includes this project as an essential component in addition to its economic contribution. A major hydrogen hub has been created by the union of several industrial partners’ H2 initiatives in Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Brandenburg. Therefore, it serves as a key component in implementing the German and European hydrogen strategies in addition to being a unique project for the people and economy of East Germany.

The Concrete Chemicals industrial project at RĂźdersdorf, close to Berlin, will use some of the hydrogen produced in the Prignitz-Falkenhagen industrial park. The hydrogen must be added to the pipeline that transports hydrogen between EisenhĂźttenstadt, Leipzig, and Rostock, where it can also supply other clients. A fueling station and trailer can supply additional nearby and local clients.

Partnerships

Strategic relationships are one of the project’s major developments in order to effectively utilize all of the technologies. One of these collaborations is with Deliscious Vertical Farming in the Prignitz-Falkenhagen industrial park, where the idea is to produce lettuce using electrolysis waste heat for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. This environmentally friendly use of the waste heat not only improves the electrolysis system’s efficiency but also significantly lowers the carbon footprint of the nearby salad farm.

The use of hydrogen in industrial processes will result in large CO2 equivalent savings: Pritzwalk-Falkenhagen’s capacity to manufacture hydrogen, for instance, enables the annual transformation of 60,000 tons of CO2 into sustainably produced aviation fuels.
