Canada – EverWind Fuels, Canada’s most advanced large-scale green hydrogen project, has announced the acquisition of three wind farm development projects in Nova Scotia: Windy Ridge, Bear Lake, and Kmtnuk.
These wind farms, representing a total capacity of approximately 530MW, will play a crucial role in powering Phase 1 of EverWind’s ambitious green hydrogen and ammonia production. The project aims to make a significant private investment in renewable energy generation, creating jobs, and contributing to the province’s renewable energy targets.
$1 billion investment
The development of the Windy Ridge, Bear Lake, and Kmtnuk wind farms signifies a substantial private investment of $1 billion in Nova Scotia’s renewable energy sector. The construction and operation of these wind farms will not only generate clean energy but also create approximately 650 jobs during the construction phase and 30 full-time positions for ongoing operations in Nova Scotia. Furthermore, these wind farms will contribute to Nova Scotia’s goal of achieving an 80% Renewable Energy Standard by 2030.
The acquisition of these wind farms aligns with EverWind’s commitment to the green energy transition and supports the province’s renewable energy targets. The additional generating capacity provided by the wind farms complements Nova Scotia’s recent Rate Base Procurement and strengthens the provincial grid’s resilience. By acting as a flexible power user, EverWind contributes to the stability and integration of renewable energy into Nova Scotia’s grid.
Green hydrogen potential
The wind farms acquired by EverWind will not only bolster Nova Scotia’s renewable energy capacity but also serve as a critical component of EverWind’s green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. The development of this facility aims to establish Canada’s preeminent green hydrogen economy, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and driving the adoption of clean energy solutions.
Partnerships
EverWind has partnered with Renewable Energy Systems Ltd. (RES), the largest private developer of renewable power globally, for the development and construction of the wind farms. RES brings extensive experience in wind farm development, including previous projects in Nova Scotia, positioning them as a valuable partner for EverWind.
Additionally, EverWind has joined forces with Black & Veatch, a leading engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company, for the development and construction of the green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. Black & Veatch’s expertise in hydrogen and ammonia projects, along with their track record of successful infrastructure projects worldwide, ensures the effective implementation of EverWind’s vision.
With the Wind Farms’ electricity supply transmitted through Nova Scotia’s power grid to EverWind’s facility, the project ensures that all power for Phase 1 of production comes from newly built renewable energy sources. EverWind also plans to incorporate solar power, with up to 300MW of solar installations adjacent to the facility, further enhancing grid flexibility benefits.
As EverWind’s production relies on intermittent renewable energy sources, the project will utilize PEM electrolyzers in its initial phase. These electrolyzers can rapidly adjust hydrogen production to respond to variable green energy inputs, ensuring a reliable and flexible operation. The combined energy generation from the wind farms and solar developments is expected to reach 2,500,000 MWh, providing enough power for the production of over 200,000 tonnes of ammonia.
Phase 2
Looking ahead, EverWind has plans for Phase 2 of production, including an agreement to lease Crown land for an additional 2 gigawatts of wind energy. The company is also developing a green hydrogen project in Newfoundland and Labrador, further expanding its green energy footprint.
To ensure compliance with the strictest international standards, EverWind is in the process of appointing an independent verification firm to certify the green hydrogen production, including adherence to European RFNBO criteria. This commitment underscores EverWind’s dedication to delivering high-quality, sustainable green hydrogen.
