Spain/The Netherlands – Ports of Bilbao and Amsterdam have joined forces to develop a renewable hydrogen corridor between Bilbao and Amsterdam after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Energy Agency of the Basque Government (EVE), Petronor, SkyNRG, Evos Amsterdam, and Zenith Energy Terminals.
The maritime route connecting the two ports will be the main emphasis of the corridor. According to the MoU, the parties will collaborate to create a renewable hydrogen supply chain, with a focus on Basque Country production and export to the Netherlands and the rest of Europe via the port of Amsterdam. This is in line with EVE’s broader Basque Hydrogen Strategy, which encourages the production, import, and use of hydrogen and is focused on both domestic and international markets.
REpowerEU targets
All parties to the MoU are eager to support the collaboration between Spain and the Netherlands as well as the goals of the European Union as outlined in the REpowerEU strategic plan. The construction of a corridor between the ports of Bilbao and Amsterdam will link two Hydrogen Valleys that are currently undergoing tremendous development. The corridor will promote knowledge and skill sharing between the parties engaged in addition to facilitating the trading of renewable hydrogen and e-fuels. The next stages for their cooperation will be mutually discussed by the Spanish and Dutch parties. In the end, this project will improve Spanish-Dutch ties and further the broader objective of cutting emissions.
