Spain – Enagás Renovables, Naturgy, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have invested €1,700 million in the start-up of a green hydrogen manufacturing plant in Andorra, Teruel.
The “Catalina” project will be of regional and general interest, according to Javier Lambán, president of the Aragonese government. On May 17, the Governing Council will approve the declaration of interest and begin processing the Plan of General Interest of Aragon (PIGA), which will make the investment easier.
When operating at full capacity, the project aims to generate 80,000 tons of green hydrogen from renewable sources. A portion of the hydrogen created by the renewable electricity generated in Aragon will be utilized to create fertilizers in Levante, but the majority will be used in Aragon to create a high-value sector. The initiative is anticipated to draw talent from Andorra as well as other regions of Aragon and the nation, creating numerous employment opportunities.
The project is in an advanced stage, according to one of the project heads, José Gómez Arroyo, who anticipates development to be finished, financial close, and plant operationalization by the end of 2024. By establishing Aragon as a global leader in hydrogen production, the initiative will significantly increase the region’s wealth.
Spain’s goal
Lambán has emphasized that green hydrogen will be produced in Andorra and distributed to the Valencian Community as well as to Aragon, creating a substantial amount of money in the area. With the energy produced in Aragon creating riches in the area and opening up enormous potential for Zaragoza and local businesses, the project represents a crucial turning point in the history of the neighborhood.
With the European Union aiming for 40 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2030, this project represents a big step toward Spain’s goal of 4 GW of electrolysis capacity by that year. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and aid in the fight against climate change, green hydrogen production is crucial.
By making this huge investment in green hydrogen generation, Enagás Renovables, Naturgy, and CIP are promoting economic growth, creating a large number of job possibilities, and aiding Spain’s attempts to reduce its carbon footprint.
