Belgium – Jan De Nul Group, DEME Group, and Aertssen Group in JV Terranova partner with Luminus and Nippon Gases to build and operate a green hydrogen production facility on the ‘Zonneberg’ in Zelzate.
Terranova Hydrogen NV is the new partnership formed by the enterprises. The three firms aim to collaborate on the Zonneberg for the construction and operation of a 2.5 MW electrolysis unit to produce green hydrogen, including storage capacity and a compression and filling station. Furthermore, the facility has the potential to be expanded to 5 MW.
Green energy from brownfields
Green hydrogen will be created on the Terranova site on the Zonneberg in the North Sea Port of Zelzate using green energy supplied locally. A larger solar farm is already located atop the former landfill. The former brownfield is now being converted into a green energy manufacturing centre.
Furthermore, the area is conveniently positioned next to the R4 ringway around the Port of Ghent, at a crossroads of the motorways Antwerp-Bruges and Lille-Rotterdam, as well as next to the Ghent-Terneuzen channel.
Preparatory works
The Flemish government provided Terranova Hydrogen NV strategic funding of 4.33 million euros by the end of 2022 as part of the deployment of the “Flemish Hydrogen Vision.” Meanwhile, the permit was acquired, and Terranova NV began preliminary construction on the property. The first hydrogen molecule will be produced in early 2025.
