United Kingdom – Krensen, Trident Marine Electrical, and ACUA Ocean have teamed up to create a zero-emission liquid hydrogen marine powertrain system.
The innovative hydrogen powertrain combines Krensen’s competence in electric and hybrid marine propulsion technologies, Trident Marines’ knowledge in electrical engineering and automation, and ACUA Ocean’s patent-pending hydrogen technology from the United Kingdom.
Prototype system testing
ACUA Ocean recently announced the completion of the build and testing of their innovative liquid hydrogen cryogenic tank, which has now acquired Lloyd’s Register Certification and is ready to deploy as part of the integrated hydrogen powertrain system, during the first phase of the project.
The prototype system will be tested in Lowestoft during the summer of 2023 before being installed on ACUA Ocean’s hydrogen-powered USV for in-water testing in 2024.
Financial support
The partnership is financed by the UK Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 2 (CMDC2), which was launched in May 2022 and is funded by the Department of Transport and delivered in collaboration with Innovate UK. The Government gave over £14 million to 31 projects backed by 121 organizations from around the UK as part of the CMDC2 to deliver feasibility studies and collaborative R&D initiatives in clean maritime solutions.
