The Netherlands – CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco, placed an order for a fuel cell system with Ballard Power Systems.
The Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind project will incorporate the Ballard fuel cell system. With delivery anticipated for 2024, Ballard will provide a containerized fuel cell power solution with a 1 MW peak power capacity. The second stationary power project by Ballard to be installed in Europe is for peak shaving power generation uses.
Offshore wind farm
Off the coast of the Netherlands, the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm will have a 759 MW capacity and produce at least 3.3 TWh annually. This amount of renewable energy may provide green electricity to more than 1 million Dutch households, or the equivalent.
CrossWind plans to use a variety of cutting-edge technologies, including as water electrolysis, to regulate the intermittent wind power generation and create green hydrogen for energy storage. Green hydrogen will be used as fuel in Ballard’s hydrogen fuel cells to provide reliable and dispatchable power.
