The Netherlands – For Gasunie subsidiary Hynetwork Services, Arcadis is developing ideas for the installation of a high-pressure hydrogen network in the Netherlands.
The declaration comes after the Dutch government decided to invest over EUR 750 million to build a national hydrogen network throughout the Netherlands in June 2022. This project is a crucial component of plans for a nationwide network of pipelines linking the hydrogen storage facility in Zuidwending and surrounding nations with the five major industrial districts in the Netherlands: Noord, IJmond, Rijnmond, Zeeland, and Limburg.
Network rollout
Every effort is being made to repurpose existing natural gas pipelines as part of the network rollout. It is predicted that recycled natural gas pipelines will make up roughly 85% of the hydrogen network. New construction will be employed in cases where this is not practicable.
The network’s existing infrastructure must be carefully integrated with the new infrastructure. Arcadis is looking into the consequences on the environment as part of its mandate and will create a thorough environmental impact study to assist in the decision-making process. This will involve ecological and archeological research as well as taking other aspects like health and safety into account. The project is already in the planning stages, and it will likely take two to three years to complete.
