The Netherlands – Danish Ramboll will study NortH2’s multi-gigawatt offshore hydrogen production in the Dutch North Sea.

The NortH2 consortiumā€”Eneco, RWE, Equinor, and Shellā€”is working with Gasunie to coordinate hydrogen value chain development from production through transmission and storage.

A multi-gigawatt wind farm in the North Sea coupled to an onshore hydrogen factory will transport hydrogen over the European hydrogen backbone to industrial clusters in the Netherlands and Northern Europe.

By 2040, onshore and offshore electrolysis capacity should reach 10 GW. Green hydrogen output might reach 0.75 million tonnes per year.

Groundwork

The consortium has hired Ramboll to design and define offshore hydrogen production concepts in addition to its onshore electrolysis facility proposals.

Ramboll will study wind farm designs, electrolyser technology, and hydrogen transport. Ramboll will examine the environmental impact, levelized cost of hydrogen, market, and business case for each design.

In January 2023, the feasibility study will provide the groundwork for Dutch North Sea offshore hydrogen production in 2030ā€“35.
