United Kingdom – Protuem Energy of the United States and Transitus Energy of the United Kingdom have signed a letter of intent to explore hydrogen production potential in the North Sea waters of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Norway.
Blue hydrogen, which employs the same techniques as grey hydrogen generation but integrates carbon capture and storage technology to limit emissions of any damaging greenhouse gases, is being pursued by Proteum and Transitus.
Hydrogen is becoming a popular alternative energy source among energy firms. Last month, GE Gas Power and Shell Global Solutions, an LNG business inside the corporation, announced an agreement to investigate ways to reduce carbon intensity at Shell’s global LNG projects through the use of blue hydrogen processes. However, hydrogen may not be the all-purpose resource for worldwide decarbonization initiatives.
Green hydrogen
Green hydrogen is one of the most environmentally friendly processing technologies known today. It employs renewable energy to produce an electric current capable of splitting water into its elemental components — oxygen and hydrogen — while emitting no carbon.
The question is whether it is preferable to employ renewable resources for power generation. Green hydrogen is not a cure-all, according to a research released this week by the House of Commons.
Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe and a powerful energy carrier, but House leaders believe its future applications will be limited to specialized applications.
