United States – Amogy inked a contract with Ballard Power Systems to purchase fuel cell engines for ammonia-to-power maritime applications.

Amogy agrees to purchase three 200kW FCwave engines under this arrangement, and Ballard will assist in integrating the fuel cell engines with Amogy’s patented ammonia reforming technology. Ballard will supply the first FCwave engines to Amogy for maritime deployment in 2023. Following the successful completion of the initial projects, a follow-on order for an additional seven FCwave engines is expected.

Technology expansion

The FCwave engine from Ballard is a scalable fuel cell system that is certified for use in marine settings. Amogy’s proprietary ammonia-to-power platform is based on proprietary ammonia cracking technology, which allows for onboard hydrogen extraction for fuel in a hydrogen engine. The Amogy team is currently expanding the technology for use in marine vessels, with ambitions to operate a tank barge and tugs.

The International Maritime Organization has set ambitious emissions-reduction targets, including a goal of reducing worldwide fleet greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels. To meet these targets, commercially viable zero-emissions vessels must enter global fleets.
