France – TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are working together to transform the Grandpuits site of TotalEnergies into a biorefinery that will generate renewable and low-carbon hydrogen.
A new plant that produces hydrogen will be built and run by Air Liquide with an investment of more than 130 million euros. At the Grandpuits location, Air Liquide will construct and run a new hydrogen production facility with a 20,000 ton annual capacity.
Incorporating carbon capture
This unit will be equipped with Cryocap, a carbon capture technology developed by Air Liquide, and will utilise biogas from the biorefinery that TotalEnergies built in part. Over 110,000 tonnes of CO2 will be able to be captured annually and used in industrial and agri-food applications, lowering the carbon footprint of the site. Compared to present methods, these advances will stop emissions of 150,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The hydrogen from the unit will be used to make sustainable aviation fuel at TotalEnergies’ biorefinery. In the Ile-de-France region, this hydrogen could potentially promote environmentally friendly transportation.
