The Netherlands – Shell has hired Yokogawa Electric Corporation, a Japanese electrical engineering and software firm, to automate the majority of the procedures involved in the construction of its Holland Hydrogen I plant in Rotterdam.

The Holland Hydrogen I facility’s electrolyser, with its 200 MW of power, will be able to produce as much as 60,000 kg of clean hydrogen each day. Shell Nederland B.V. and Shell Overseas Investments B.V. took the final investment decision to build Holland Hydrogen I in July 2022.

It is expected that after the facility begins producing renewable hydrogen in 2025 using power from the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust Noord, it will be the largest renewable hydrogen plant in Europe.

Decarbonization

Yokogawa will be the plant’s main automation provider, and all of the business’s equipment and systems will be interconnected for maximum efficacy.

The plant’s goal is to partially decarbonize the refinery’s production of energy items like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel by shipping the green hydrogen it generates via the HyTransPort pipeline to the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam.
