Norway – HAV Group, a Norwegian technology company, has received preliminary approval from DNV for its hydrogen-based energy system.

The system was developed as part of the FreeCO2ast project, which is currently developing a high-capacity hydrogen energy system that can be retrofitted onboard two coastal cruise vessels owned by Norwegian operator Havila Kystruten.

The preliminary approval from DNV means that HAV Group can move on to the final design stage, bringing its hydrogen system one step closer to commercialization.

Hydrogen systems

Green hydrogen has the potential to play a significant role in the decarbonization of shipping, both as a catalyst for synthetic fuels and as a direct ship fuel. However, because of its unique properties, hydrogen is a difficult fuel to work with, and because there are no prescriptive regulations, companies wishing to launch hydrogen systems must adhere to the IMO guidelines on alternative design (MSC.1/Circ.1455). When using hydrogen, as with all emerging fuels, maintaining high safety levels is critical.
