Germany – Air Liquide and Siemens Energy have formed a joint venture for the industrial scale production of renewable hydrogen electrolyzers in Europe.
This Franco-German collaboration will support the development of a European ecosystem for electrolysis and hydrogen technology as well as the emergence of a sustainable hydrogen economy. Production is anticipated to start in the second half of 2023 and ramp up to a three gigawatt annual production capacity by 2025.
The joint venture, whose formation is still pending approval from the relevant authorities, will be split between Siemens Energy and Air Liquide, with Siemens Energy owning 25.1% and Air Liquide holding 74.9%. Berlin will serve as the main office for this joint venture. The multi-gigawatt joint venture factory that makes electrolysis modules would also be situated in the German capital.
Joint development
As the market is expanding quickly, this factory will provide stacks to both groups for their diverse customer bases. These stacks will have a high level of efficiency and are perfectly suited to harvest volatile renewable energy because they are based on proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis technology. Additionally, as part of their partnership, Air Liquide and Siemens Energy have agreed to allocate R&D resources to the joint development of the next generation of electrolyzer technologies.
