Germany – TÜV SÜD has opened a cutting-edge hydrogen research facility, based in Garching near Munich.

From design validation and development to material selection and qualification to type approval and certification, the organization’s testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) experts assist companies with a test laboratory.

The resistance to pressure cycles and leak tightness of test items, as well as their behavior in throughflow mode or in the event of overpressure or bursting, are all tested in the lab. Permeation and hydrogen compatibility are also examined by the experts. Further TÜV SÜD test laboratories offer hydraulic testing, environmental simulation, and electromagnetic compatibility testing.

Development stages

One of the main focuses of the new TÜV SÜD laboratory is the study of hydrogen compatibility and material permeation. The laboratory’s service portfolio also includes component testing in the lead-up to type approval and certification.

The test laboratory’s second stage of expansion is currently underway and will be completed by the end of the year. The company will build various test capacities at a new laboratory location, including facilities for testing tank systems of heavy-duty vehicles and from the industrial sector, in the final stage, which is scheduled for 2024.
