Germany – RWE Gas Storage West plans to build a hydrogen storage facility in Gronau-Epe by 2027 as part of the GET H2 initiative.
Storage facilities are also an important component of a future European green hydrogen infrastructure. The majority of the facility will be constructed on the RWE site in Kottiger Hook. The cavern will be connected to the above-ground facility, as well as to a future hydrogen transport network, via pipelines outside the storage site.
Year-end decision
RWE has applied for funding through the “Important Projects of Common European Interest” (IPCEI) program with partners from the GET H2 initiative. In the second half of 2022, a decision is expected. A corresponding funding commitment is required before a final investment decision can be made. The formal approval process with public participation will begin in the first half of 2022 in order to ensure commercial commissioning by 2027.
