Germany/UAE – The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has entered into a number of agreements with European companies to investigate hydrogen transportation between the UAE and Germany.
The companies involved include RWE, GETEC Group, Uniper, Hydrogenious LOHC and JERA Americas.
Multiple agreements
Uniper, Germany’s Hydrogenious LOHC, JERA Americas, and ADNOC have signed a joint study agreement (JSA) to investigate hydrogen transportation using Hydrogenious’ Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology. The LOHC technology developed by Hydrogenious is based on the proprietary carrier material benzyl toluene (BT). There are no hydrogen losses when stored in the BT, allowing for long storage times and large volumes.
In addition, RWE and ADNOC also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for low-carbon and green hydrogen collaboration. RWE and ADNOC agreed to assess the potential for joint development of green hydrogen and hydrogen derivative production projects in relevant international markets in addition to hydrogen imports.
Furthermore, GETEC Group signed a collaboration agreement with ADNOC for the use of hydrogen produced in the United Arab Emirates. This promising energy will be transported in the form of ammonia in order to reach Europe efficiently. Blue ammonia will be delivered first in order to set up the logistics structures for clean hydrogen import into Germany as quickly as possible. Blue ammonia is made from natural gas as a hydrogen carrier, but unlike gray hydrogen, the CO2 produced in the process is not released into the atmosphere but instead stored. The hydrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable sources produces green hydrogen or ammonia.
Clean energy source
Hydrogen is widely recognized as a valuable clean energy source with the potential to meet a large portion of the world’s growing energy demands. The UAE’s competitive hydrogen production is made possible by its plentiful and low-cost access to renewable energy and hydrocarbons, as well as its existing large-scale hydrogen production infrastructure. ADNOC intends to lead Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s hydrogen activities by leveraging its hydrogen production, infrastructure, and partnership base, with the goal of becoming one of the world’s leading producers of hydrogen and its carrier fuels.
