United KingdomJohnson Matthey has introduced HyCOgenTM, an innovative technology that will enable the conversion of captured carbon dioxide (CO2) and green hydrogen into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Johnson Matthey offers an integrated, scalable solution for the efficient and cost-effective production of renewable power-based SAF by combining HyCOgen with the FT CANS Fischer Tropsch technology (developed in collaboration with bp).

HyCOgen, Johnson Matthey’s Reverse Water Gas Shift technology, is a catalyzed process that converts green hydrogen and CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO), which is then combined with more hydrogen to form synthesis gas (syngas), a critical building block in the production of fuels and chemicals. The integration with FT CANS technology results in an end-to-end, optimized, and highly scalable process that converts 95% of CO2 into high-quality synthetic crude oil. This synthetic crude oil can be upgraded into environmentally friendly drop-in fuels like aviation fuels, renewable diesel, and naphtha.

The integrated HyCOgen/FT CANS solution’s scalability allows for cost-effective deployment across a wide range of project sizes, from small-scale hydrogen production from a single electrolyser to large-scale hydrogen production from multiple large electrolyser modules.

Because the global aviation industry is responsible for 12% of transportation-related CO2 emissions, large-scale production of low-carbon SAF is required to reduce emissions. Both the EU2 and the US3 have set ambitious targets for scale-up and blending, which is expected to significantly increase SAF demand. The HyCOgen solution from Johnson Matthey, in combination with the FT CANS technology, can help increase SAF supply by allowing for efficient production at scale.
