Norway – For the world’s largest single stack high-pressure alkaline electrolyser, ABB has signed an agreement with HydrogenPro, a hydrogen plant company, to supply electrical equipment.
Hydrogen is produced by using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The system will be able to produce 1,100 cubic meters of green hydrogen per hour (Nm3/h) at a specially built test facility in Herya, Norway, in 2022.
In order to meet the growing demand for hydrogen, which has increased by threefold since 1975, technologies must be scaled up and production costs must be reduced. Green hydrogen production costs account for 70 to 90 percent of the total cost, so efficiency is critical to lowering production costs.
Transformers, rectifiers, DC Chokes, and Busbars are all part of the electrical package that ABB will provide. Hydrogen production is extremely energy-intensive, and this integrated portfolio approach will ensure that every single, possible improvement in efficiency is taken into account in the production process.
Electrolyzer performance and efficiency will be thoroughly tested as part of the validation program. Before introducing similar technology on a long-term, large-scale basis at other facilities around the world, HydrogenPro will be able to make further improvements to the electrolyser system.
This is ABB’s first green hydrogen order in Norway, following a two-year partnership with HydrogenPro. This effort to scale and test hydrogen technology in order to meet global decarbonization goals will pave the way for the launch of large green hydrogen plants in the future.
