Germany INEOS has announced plans to develop a large-scale, 100MW electrolyzer to manufacture green hydrogen at its Köln location in Germany through its subsidiary INOVYN.

The project is part of INEOS’s more than €2 billion investment in green hydrogen, which was revealed earlier this week.

INEOS will manufacture green hydrogen as a first stage in the project to feed into INEOS green ammonia production – the new application in the future of green fuel generation. As the world’s second largest chemical product, switching to green ammonia manufacturing might result in a yearly reduction of over 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This breakthrough by INEOS Nitriles marks the beginning of the chemical industry’s transition to a low-carbon future.

The project will also attempt to create E-Fuels on an industrial scale at the INEOS Köln plant using Power-to-Methanol applications. This approach will further decarbonize chemical value chains by utilizing carbon capture in conjunction with green hydrogen to make sustainable methanol and its derivatives.

Furthermore, hydrogen will be made available for other INEOS processes at the site, to chemical park operator Currenta – who will also supply critical infrastructure to the project – and to other users in the vicinity to promote the local sustainability goal.

The green hydrogen project seeks to minimize direct and indirect carbon emissions by more than 120,000 tonnes per year, taking sustainability to the next level by moving toward 100% resource utilization.

The project has cleared the first stage of the IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) selection procedure.
