Germany – Essity, a hygiene and health company, is beginning a trial project in Mainz-Kostheim, Germany, to run a paper mill CO2-free with green hydrogen.
On the site’s largest paper machine, natural gas is gradually replaced with green hydrogen throughout ongoing production for this purpose. This is a ground-breaking project for the paper industry. Essity has committed EUR 4 million to the trial project.
For the first time, Essity is utilizing environmentally friendly hydrogen in its manufacturing operations. Using green hydrogen as a substitute for natural gas in the tissue production process, the Mainz-Kostheim site of Essity is studying whether or not product quality will be compromised.
It will take some time for Essity to complete the necessary installations and rebuild the paper machine before it begins using green hydrogen to power its operations. A 100 percent green hydrogen-powered drying canopy for the paper mill is planned for autumn 2022.
Essity’s objective of net-zero emissions by 2050 will be aided by the green hydrogen pilot project expenditure.
