Norway/United Kingdom – The Port of Cromarty Firth and Gen2 Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide a commercial channel for green hydrogen imports from Norway into the UK energy market.
The collaboration will give supply security for the Cromarty Firth’s own plans for a large-scale electrolyzer project, as well as guarantee green hydrogen to those who desire access to clean energy by mid-2023, giving them the confidence to make real plans to begin switching their infrastructure.
It will also contribute to the Scottish Government’s objective of becoming a leading hydrogen nation capable of producing 5GW of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen by 2030 – enough clean energy to power 1.8 million households.
Hydrogen hub in Cromarty Firth
The MoU is also a significant step forward in the effort to develop a green hydrogen hub in the Cromarty Firth, bringing a new international dimension to the Highland region’s goal of producing, storing, and supplying hydrogen to the rest of Scotland, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
The Firth will become the UK transhipment centre for Gen2 Energy’s hydrogen, which will be created from surplus renewable energy in Norway and exported across the North Sea to the Port. Hydrogen would then be delivered to customers across the United Kingdom through road, rail, and sea.
Port of Cromarty Firth chief executive Bob Buskie said: “We are on the cusp of another renewable energy revolution, with demand for clean energy rising every year. This MoU can put the Highlands on the map as one of the largest suppliers of clean hydrogen energy in Europe, alongside our established leadership in the onshore and offshore wind markets.”
