Germany – The German government writes a tender for new gas-fired power plant. The government will announce early next year who will be allowed to build the new gas-fired power plants, which together are to generate about 5 GW, with public subsidies. The contract will go to the party asking for the least subsidy.

The plants are needed to serve as a backstop in case solar panels or wind turbines experience a dip in power production because the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing. In the future, the plants should be converted to run on hydrogen as well.

Some major power companies in Germany have already shown interest, including RWE and Uniper. Billion-dollar subsidies would be needed especially to adapt the power plants to hydrogen. For the Netherlands, the new power plants could also be of interest. The power grid is connected to networks across the border.
