United Kingdom – For the electrification of a North Sea oil and gas platform using wind, wave, and hydrogen-based renewable energy systems, a UK offshore operator has selected Floating Power Plant (FPP) and TechnipFMC.

Using a hydrogen-based energy storage system from TechnipFMC and FPP’s hybrid floating wind and wave energy platform to reduce intermittency and maximize usable power is the primary goal of the concept select study.

Working together, FPP and TechnipFMC will devise and test an effective strategy for reducing CO2 emissions from platform operations while posing the least amount of operational risk.

Technical concept

Both hardware and control requirements will be examined as part of this study. On the other hand, a hydrogen solution on board the floating wind platform will be another important factor in reducing emissions from the oil and gas platform.

Fuel cells will be used to store excess energy from the platform’s power production, reducing the need for fossil-fuelled generators significantly.

While developing a technical concept, the project’s goal is not only to provide an economic and CO2 abatement assessment, but also to investigate commercial delivery models tailored to oil and gas market’s specific requirements.
