The Netherlands – LyondellBasell (LYB) is acquiring German APK, which went bankrupt in May. With the acquisition, LYB is expanding its Circular and Low Carbon Solutions Business. According to LYB, APK’s solution-based recycling technology complements its already existing mechanical and advanced recycling technologies.

LYB and APK have worked together in the past to scale up APK’s technology. With the acquisition, APK’s future is secured.

APK has a recycling technology for low-density polyethylene (LDPE). LYB aims to increase recycling of difficult-to-recycle flexible plastic waste material. The technology separates the various polymers and produces recycled materials with a high degree of purity suitable for new flexible packaging.

In March 2023, LYB unveiled its crucial new business strategy aimed at establishing LYB as an industry leader in sustainability. As part of that strategy, the Circular & Low Carbon Solutions (CLCS) company was established to make substantial investments in upstream plastic waste sorting and recycling operations in Europe , the United States and Asia .
