Finland – Business Finland has awarded Fortum Battery Recycling a 4.5 million euro grant to develop its recycling facility in Ikaalinen, Finland.
By increasing the facility’s mechanical processing capacity, Fortum Battery Recycling hopes to enhance the performance of the hydrometallurgical plant in Harjavalta. At the battery recycling facility in Ikaalinen, Fortum Battery Recycling plans to make investments in a new type of mechanical shredder and associated water and gas management machinery.
Market first
Fortum can join the market first thanks to investment from Business Finland, and by acting promptly, it can guarantee a considerable market share. The planned investment would boost production capacity and make it possible to produce black mass that is better suited for the hydrometallurgical process. The investment’s annual capacity is 5,000 tonnes of electric vehicle batteries. The new, upgraded process would also make it possible to recover metals, polymers, and black material at a higher rate, as well as to increase process safety and lessen the environmental effect of the plant by producing less trash.
The process improvement project includes support from Finland’s sustainable development program through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU initiative, which will also help the EU reach its tighter recycling rate objective.
