The Netherlands – Sabic and Plastic Energy awarded the EPCM contract for the construction of their plastic recycling plant in Geleen to Worley. The two parties build the plant within a 50/50 joint venture: Sabic Plastic Energy Advanced Recycling (Spear).
Plastic Energy has developed a thermochemical conversion technology to convert difficult-to-recycle plastics into synthetic oils. The dirty and mixed plastics are otherwise incinerated or landfilled. The oils – the company calls it Tacoil – go as raw material to the Sabic installations at Chemelot. The company turns them into polymers again.
Circular polymers
Sabic and Plastic Energy have been working together since 2019 to bring pyrolysis technology to maturity. And to build up a market for the circular polymers. The new plant at Chemelot is the first commercial-scale plant. It will significantly increase the production of circular polymers at Sabic. These are, incidentally, identical to existing polymers in terms of properties.
Worley was created in 2019 through a combination of WorleyParsons and the Energy, Chemicals and Resources division of Jacobs. Offices in England and the Netherlands will work on the EPCM contract, which has a duration of two years. The new plant is scheduled to go into production in the second half of 2022.
