United Kingdom – Uniper has awarded Aker Carbon Capture a Process Design Package (PDP) for a proposed post-combustion carbon capture plant at their Grain power station in Kent, Southeast England.

Uniper’s Grain Carbon Capture project aims to retrofit post-combustion carbon capture technology on all three existing Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) units at the power plant. The goal is to capture over 2 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

Aker Carbon Capture will deliver its proprietary process technology design in the first phase. This encompasses the entire carbon capture process, from capturing and conditioning CO2 to liquefaction and temporary storage.

PDP delivery process

The PDP will provide crucial design information for an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firm, facilitating the final engineering of the carbon capture plant. Aker’s innovative design will be evaluated for one of the three gas turbines, aiding in planning and permitting applications. If Aker is chosen as the technology licensor after the PDP process, the project will progress to the front-end engineering and design phase.

Uniper’s commitment aligns with the UK Government’s substantial investment of up to GBP 20 billion for local carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. The Grain Carbon Capture project, if successful, could significantly contribute to the UK’s goal of capturing 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
