The Netherlands – Yara International, a leading global ammonia producer, and Northern Lights, a CO2 transport and storage provider, have signed a commercial agreement to transport and permanently store 800,000 tons of CO2 per year from Yara’s ammonia production facility in Sluiskil, the Netherlands.
Under the agreement, captured CO2 from Yara’s Sluiskil plant will be liquefied and transported by Northern Lights to its storage site on the Norwegian continental shelf. The CO2 will be injected into geological formations approximately 2.6 kilometers under the seabed, where it will be permanently stored.
Adopting CCS technologies
The successful implementation of this project has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate industries in Europe. It also sets a precedent for other companies in the ammonia and fertilizer industry to adopt CCS technologies.
