United States – Sempra Infrastructure has signed a participation agreement for the development of the proposed Hackberry Carbon Sequestration (HCS) project in Louisiana with TotalEnergies, Mitsui & Co. and Mitsubishi Corporation.
According to the participation agreement, the combined Cameron LNG Phase 1 and proposed Phase 2 export projects could serve as an anchor source for the HCS project’s carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and sequestration. It also lays the groundwork for the parties to form a joint venture for the HCS project with Sempra Infrastructure.
Permits
Last year, the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration project applied to the US Environmental Protection Agency for a Class VI Injection well permit to store up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 permanently.
A number of risks and uncertainties surround the development of the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration project, including the signing of additional project-related agreements, obtaining all necessary permits, and making a final investment decision.
