Australia – The Gould Creek Battery Energy Storage System project in Adelaide has hit a new milestone, with development authorization granted to Maoneng by South Australia’s Minister for Planning and Local Government.
The company received permission without making any significant changes to its application, allowing the project to move forward to the next level.
The 225MWp / 450MWh BESS, which will be constructed directly adjacent to the Para transmission substation in the City of Playford, about 22 kilometers northeast of Adelaide’s CBD, will power up to 40,000 residences.
The BESS will offer efficient and secure power to local communities, thereby supporting South Australia’s commitment to renewable energy and emissions reductions.
It would increase electricity grid dependability and network stability by pulling energy from the grid for battery storage during off-peak periods and delivering energy to the grid instantly during peak periods, assisting the Australian Energy Market Operator in maintaining energy security.
The Department of Energy and Mining is providing Crown sponsorship assistance for the project, which will result in millions of dollars of investment in the local economy and community, which will remain involved as major stakeholders.
Maoneng anticipates starting construction in late 2022 and finishing the project 12 months later, creating up to 160 full-time equivalent employment during this phase.
