United States – In order to increase the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) globally, Boeing and Alder Fuels agreed a new partnership.
The businesses will test and qualify SAF made from Alder, advance legislation to hasten the aviation industry’s switch to renewable energy sources, and increase the supply of SAF for the global aerospace market using Boeing aircraft.
With the help of proprietary technology from Alder Fuels, abundant, sustainable forest residues and regenerable biomass can be transformed into a low-negative carbon “greencrude” for the production of jet fuel. The Alder product can be produced by current refineries using their existing infrastructure and equipment because it is suitable for conversion into drop-in SAF. Alder anticipates finishing its first plant in 2024.
Global SAF scaling
In order to ensure readiness, Boeing will support the testing and qualification of SAF derived from Alder, including flight demonstrations. The rapid and global scaling up of sustainable aviation fuel and new energy sources, according to the Air Transport Action Group, an industry coalition focused on sustainability, is the single biggest opportunity to meet and go beyond the industry’s 2050 goal.
Boeing pledged in January 2021 to deliver all SAF-capable aircraft by 2030 and is currently using SAF in its own operations as well as expanding the supply of SAF globally.
