Finland – Ahlstrom-Munksjö has introduced a groundbreaking mono-material oxygen barrier technology comprised entirely of cellulose fibers, in line with its ‘from Plastic to Purpose’ campaign.
The PureBarrier technology is based on Genuine Vegetable Parchment and has a variety of features such as oxygen and gas barrier properties as well as natural wet strength. It is naturally grease resistant, has no loose fiber or extra chemicals, and can be made heat sealable with a biopolymer, allowing it to be used in an infinite variety of applications.
Most importantly, PureBarrier is a perfect alternative to non-renewable oxygen barrier packaging due to its sustainable ‘from Plastic to Purpose’ qualities such as biodegradability and compostability.
PureBarrier is made from responsibly sourced and renewable wood pulp, is Forest Stewardship Council certified, and is biodegradable and compostable with OK COMPOST/ OK COMPOST HOME from TÜV.
PureBarrier has already been commercialized as coffee capsule closures and brewing materials for espresso systems, and it is currently being studied in a variety of nonfood applications such as Health & Beauty items.
