Finland – Hitachi ABB Power Grids has been granted a contract to provide one of Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) to Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) on the island of Olkiluoto.
In the event of a hypothetical production disruption in the Olkiluoto 3 plant unit, the 90-megawatt system will support the entire energy network, minimizing the influence of power variations on the grid. The turnkey system serves as a backup power supply that can be activated quickly. On the island of Olkiluoto, TVO is constructing a third nuclear power plant unit. Once operational, the island is estimated to supply approximately 30% of Finland’s electricity, assisting in Finland’s transition to carbon-neutral electricity production. The battery energy storage system will be commissioned in 2022.
